Emma Fortunato of Demarest Earns Academic Honors at Dominican College Honors Convocation

2013 Dec 9

On November 25, Dominican College held the annual Honors Convocation Ceremony during which students were recognized for academic achievement. Students who were named to the Dean's List for one or more complete years were awarded a symbol appropriate to academic excellence, the tassel that graduates wear during commencement.

These distinctively colored tassels signify the sustained quality of their academic work at the College. White tassels were awarded for superior achievement for one complete academic year. Red tassels were awarded for exceptional accomplishment in College studies for two complete academic years. Gold tassels were awarded to those students who have maintained outstanding academic records for three complete academic years.

Students were also inducted into Alpha Chi, the national honor society. During the ceremony students pledged themselves to both scholarship and service. Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of an institution's juniors, seniors, and graduate students.

Emma Fortunato of Demarest, received a red tassel and became a member of Alpha Chi.

Alpha Chi student leadership at Dominican College and their faculty advisors have created two annual awards also presented at the Honors Convocation. The first is for the new member of Alpha Chi who has most notably shown commitments to both scholarship and service. The second is for a student who, after the first year of academic study, has shown promise of such commitments. The Dr. John Lounibos Award for outstanding commitment to the Dominican College Chapter of Alpha Chi was awarded to Jonathan Cho. The Sr. Miriam Catherine Nevins Award for outstanding promise was awarded to Jenna Balsamello.
